Jacob Grippin and Sunghyun Won scored two goals apiece and Brandon Kasel made 28 saves as the Ithaca High boys hockey team defeated Scarsdale, 6-4, in the state Division I semifinals this morning at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Nate Walker and Eli Gordon also scored for the sixth-ranked Little Red (12-9-1), which will play Massena, which beat Fairport, 2-1 in overtime, at 12:30 p.m. Sunday for the state championship.

Matt Blakley, Devon Schell, leading goal-scorer James Nicholas and younger brother Stephen Nicholas scored for the Raiders, champions of Section 1, who end the season 21-4-0.

The Little Red 3-1 after first period and extended its advantage to three goals, 6-3, heading into the final period. Stephen Nicholas cut the deficit to two goals with 6:36 to play on assists from Blakley and older brother James, who led the Raiders this season with 39 goals. After coach Jim Mancuso called a timeout, he sent his top line of James Nicholas, Schell and Blakley back out onto the ice for the remainder of the game.

The Raiders played with just two forward lines, and that threesome entered the game having scored 100 of Scarsdale’s 126 goals on the season.

Ithaca is seeking its sixth state championship and first since 2007. Its others came in 1984, ’87, ’94 and 2000.
