Jeff beats Providence 34-6 to stay perfect

Jeffersonville claimed another victim on its Vengeance Tour.

One year ago at this point, the Red Devils were mired in a four-game losing skid that was a study in self-inflicted wounds. They vowed to redeem themselves. So far, they are perfect.

Not that Jeffersonville (6-0 for the first time since 1992) played perfectly — far from it. Providence just couldn’t generate enough firepower to make the Class 6-A No. 9 Devils pay for any mistakes. Cam Northern threw four touchdown passes as Jeffersonville powered past the overmatched Pioneers 34-6 on Friday night at Blair Field.

Northern, a sophomore in his second start, threw for 357 yards as the Devils — the top-scoring team in 6-A — overcame some sloppiness (four official turnovers and other unfocused plays that Jeff coach Lonnie Oldham counted in that column) and Providence’s stubborn streak.

“We were flat, but we played well enough to win,” Oldham said. “We were the better team, but we have to be able to fire. I don’t know what the deal is, but we obviously weren’t sharp in the red zone. We turned the ball over too many times.”

The Pioneers (3-3) could not manufacture consistent yards or maintain a threatening drive. Star running back Matt Bell, slowed considerably by an ankle injury, had 87 yards but lacked his usual explosiveness. Matt Hayes had 106 yards rushing with four huge bursts, but Providence’s only score came after an interception and 70-yard return into the red zone by Luke Fougerousse.

“We’re still not 100 percent,” Providence coach Larry Denison said. “Matt (Bell) tried to gut it out, but he’s not the same Matt Bell we had earlier in the season. Hopefully we can get him back that way. We’re trying to patch things together out there.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Jeff. It was our game to play keepaway with them, keep their offense off the field. They score quickly.”

Providence played that way as best it could, even converting two successful onside kicks in the second half. The Pioneers controlled the ball for over 16 minutes in the first half and had nothing positive to show for it.

“We were on the doorstep,” Denison said. “We have to bust through. We didn’t finish drives and that’s something we have to fix.”

The Devils, when they weren’t allowing the ball to slip loose, scored with rapid-fire efficiency. Their first touchdown was a two-play strike, with Northern’s 41-yard connection with Chris Campbell doing the damage.

Northern found Campbell again for the second touchdown, hitting the fleet receiver over the middle. Campbell turned the short catch into a 34-yard touchdown by slipping through three tacklers in the secondary, and Fahuwu Momoh’s extra point kick broke the scoring career scoring record to give Jeffersonville a 14-0 lead with 9:20 left in the first half.

Jeffersonville’s frustration over its lack of a larger lead was its own fault as it fumbled three times (twice inside the five).

“I wasn’t real happy,” Oldham said. “We played really well on defense. I’m proud of that.”

The Devils lost to the Pioneers 35-13 last year by allowing 354 rushing yards while adding seven turnovers and 101 yards in penalties. This time, they took control in the second half as Northern hit Braylon Brady for a 16-yard touchdown in the third quarter and Brandon Coleman for a 22-yarder in the fourth.

Fougerousse had Providence’s lone score, a 4-yard run following his pick, with 54 seconds left in the third.

Coleman caught 9 passes for 125 yards. Northern was 26 of 34 with the one interception.
