Jeffersonville’s Tim Martin finished third in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races Saturday at the IHSAA boys’ swimming/diving championships at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Martin, who also qualified third in both events Friday, came closest in the 50 in 20.75 seconds, just 0.16 seconds behind winner Kyle DeCoursey of Zionsville. Penn’s Mate Kovacs was second in 20.65.

In the 100, Martin’s 45.60 trailed the winning 43.81 of Chesterton’s Blake Pieroni and DeCoursey’s 44.74. Pieroni set a state record of 43.52 on Friday.

Martin’s teammate, Evan Shive, also swam in an “A” final, finishing eighth in the 100 backstroke in 52.20. Chesterton’s Aaron Whitaker won in a state-record 47.06, breaking his mark of 47.29 set last year.

Samantha Dillman’s 3-point basket in overtime was the key as the host Lady Stars (26-1) avenged their only loss of the season in the Class 4-A semistate.* Bedford North Lawrence 62, Lawrence North 54:

Alexa Bailey, daughter of coach Damon Bailey, led BNL with 21 points, including 13 of 20 free throws.

Defending state champion BNL will take on No. 4 Penn, which beat Logansport 44-41, in the state final at 8:15 p.m. Saturday in Terre Haute.
