John Jay High School guidance counselor and longtime softball coach Bonnie Schilling was terminated from the Wappingers (N.Y.) Central School District, officials confirmed.
The board voted unanimously on Monday to terminate Schilling, in agreement with her hearing officer’s ruling, said board President Doug Bitteker.
She was John Jay’s varsity softball coach for 18 seasons and won two state championships.
“I am saddened by the whole thing,” Bitteker said. “I know Ms. Schilling and I considered her a friend and held her in high regard.”
Schilling can appeal the ruling if she chooses.
Schilling, of Hopewell Junction, pleaded not guilty to a charge of tampering with public records, a Class D felony, said her attorney, Michael Sussman, in September.
She turned herself in to Town of East Fishkill Police on Aug. 21 and was released on her own recognizance.
A joint investigation by the Town of East Fishkill Police Department and the Wappingers Central School District showed alleged tampering with one student’s grades. Sussman, told the Poughkeepsie Journal in July that the allegation against Schilling was changing a grade for her son, a student at John Jay at that time.
Schilling has been on administrative leave since the spring.
Schilling is due back in court on Jan. 22, East Fishkill court officials said.
