Athletic achievement: She hurled the javelin 148 feet, 4 inches to win the Class 6A state championship this spring. Swenson also won the javelin throw at the Great Southwest Classic and her season-best winning effort of 155-2 at the Kansas Relays ranked as the nation’s No. 7 performance among prep competitors in 2014 at the time of her selection.

Academic excellence: Swenson has maintained a 4.06 GPA.

“Keiryn is a great athlete and a fantastic kid,” said Dana Handy, head coach at Maize. “She keeps throwing a little bit further each year, and this year she finally got over the hump. She just missed the state record. I’m sure that will be a goal next year.”

THE FUTURE: Swenson will be a senior this fall.
