THE WINNER: Allison Stewart
School: Olathe (Kan.) East
Athletic achievement: A two-time returning Gatorade State Player of the Year, Stewart posted a 17-1 record in the circle along with a 0.82 ERA, leading the Hawks (24-1) to a runner-up finish in the Class 6A state tournament. She struck out 156 batters and walked just 10 in 102.1 innings pitched, also hurling five shutouts, including two perfect games. At the plate, the three-time First Team All-Sunflower League honoree batted .310 with four home runs, 38 RBI and a .536 slugging percentage. She concluded her prep softball career with a state-record 168 RBI.
Academic excellence: Stewart has maintained a 4.0 GPA.
Exemplary character: A member of the Olathe East 21st Century Leadership Program, she has volunteered locally at a homeless shelter and food bank, as a youth mentor and as a youth softball coach.
“Allison Stewart has command of all of her pitches and she can throw them whenever she wants,” said Mike Allen, head coach of Olathe South. “She’s brutal. Plus, she can hit. She drives the ball to gaps, hits for power and has a good eye.”
THE FUTURE: Stewart has signed with Arkansas.
