Kaukauna Ghosts clinch FVA softball title

The Kaukauna softball team clinched its first FVA title in three seasons after sweeping Appleton West on Wednesday by the scores of 14-2 and 5-0 at Bayorgeon Field.

Kaukauna’s 1-2 punch of freshman pitchers overwhelmed the Terrors, with Leah Binsfeld getting the win in the first game and Haley Hestekin no-hitting the Terrors in the second game.

The top-ranked Ghosts improved to 23-1 overall and finished 17-1 in the FVA in winning their first title since the 2011 season.

“It’s good for the kids,” Kaukauna coach Tim Roehrig said. “They worked their butts off in the summer and the offseason.

“(Winning conference) was one of our goals and they reached it and I’m proud of them.”

Hestekin came within a hit batter of recording a perfect game and finished with 15 strikeouts. Binsfeld scattered five hits and totaled five strikeouts to get the win in game one.

Andrea Gocker had three hits in the first game to lead the Ghosts and Haley Huss had three hits in the second game.
