Investigation into Poughkeepsie's Barger ends Thursday

By

Former Poughkeepsie High School football coach Ken Barger will participate in his final hearing with the state education department and the Poughkeepsie City School District on Thursday.

The parties are investigating whether Barger provided students special accommodations while taking Regents exams in January 2013, Barger’s lawyer Michael Sussman said.

Thursday’s hearing is Barger’s 18th, Sussman said, but this week was the first week where Barger, who is on leave as a special education teacher, gave testimony. Barger coached Poughkeepsie from 2005 to 2012. John Castellano now coaches Poughkeepsie.

“Now, we wait for transcripts and there is a brief written after they explore all the charges,” Sussman said. “There are probably almost 200 exhibits and about 3,000 pages of transcripts.”

The scheduled final meeting will occur at 9 a.m. at Circle of Courage Learning Center in the City of Poughkeepsie.

Sussman said a hearing officer, appointed jointly by both sides, will decide on the case and he estimates that could take between two and three months.
