AMHERST, N.Y.-It took double overtime to decide the WNY Girls Varsity Federation Hockey championship Friday night at the Northtown Center. WHen it was over Kenmore had a hard fought 2-1 win over Lancaster/Iroquois.
Lancaster got on the scoreboard first in the first period. Meghan Fonfara opened the scoring with 4:08 remaining in the first period. It stayed that way until just 5:39 remained in the third period. Emily King tied it in the third period and the game headed to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime Kenmore got the winner from Lina Mirabella with 5:23 left in the second overtime session.
Kenmore head coach Jeff Orlowski told Two On Your Side’s Stu Boyar “its pretty awesome. There girls work so hard all season. They played their hearts out tonight. They dug deep. We’re in a tight game down 1-0 going into the third period and they just wanted it. They’ve wanted it all year. They’ve played really hard and I’m very very proud of them tonight.”
