Kentucky high school Q&A: North Bullitt's Savannah Morrison

Savannah Morrison is North Bullitt’s all-time leading scorer with 1,836 points, including four points as a seventh-grader. This season the 5-foot-5 guard is averaging 15.2 points, three assists and four rebounds for an 18-6 team seeded No. 1 in the 23rd District. She scored a season-high 25 points twice against Bullitt Central. North Bullitt started the season 11-0 until it lost to Ballard, a game in which Morrison scored 17 points.

What’s been your biggest thrill playing basketball for North Bullitt?

I’ve never hit a game-winning shot, but my teammate Erin Dolan made a last-second shot to beat Collins. We were down one point with three seconds left. Rachel Badgett threw the ball downcourt to Dolan and she made the shot.

What is your goal for the rest of the season?

We want to win the district title and make a run in the regional tournament. We won our district in 2012 and 2013. (The Lady Eagles will play Moore on Tuesday in their district opener.)

Have any colleges talked to you about playing for them?

I have heard from Midway College and Lane College (in Jackson, Tenn.), and I’m looking at Union College and Kentucky Christian. I really want to play, but it’s really competitive. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll probably go to UK.

What will you major in at college?

I want to study nursing, get a master’s degree and become a nurse practitioner.

Did you play AAU basketball last summer?

I played with the Shining Star, a team made up mostly of players in Northern Kentucky and Ohio. We had three players from Newport Central Catholic, including Nicole Kiernan. We finished first in a state tournament and second in the nationals at Disney World. That’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I’ve always been a scorer, but for them I had to get rebounds and do other things. It made me a better all-around player.

How do you spend your free time?

I make scrapbooks for my friends. I bake cupcakes and make a pineapple upside down cake. I watch “The Walking Dead” on TV and UK basketball whenever the Cats are on. My mom, dad and I are big UK fans.

What are your plans for this summer?

I have my first job starting at Six Flags on May 26 at the fairgrounds. I got a management position in games. Mom and Dad said I didn’t have to work as long as I played basketball, but now I can save some money for college.

She has been a starting guard on the varsity since the eighth grade. * Savannah lives with her mother, Angel, father, Andy, and twin sister, Shelby, who played varsity basketball until this season. Brother Ryan, 21, played basketball for North Bullitt. * “Savannah’s strength is her grittiness. She doesn’t quit. She goes full tilt. If I asked her to run through a wall, she would. She’s very confident in whatever she does. She’s strong at taking the ball to the basket and shooting a jumper in the lane, and she’s an 80 percent free-throw shooter. A great kid.”School:Year: Sport: Student-athlete: Family:Coach Amber Courtney:
