Kelsey Heffernan has attended quite a few Kinnelon meets over the years, watching her older sisters Rebecca and Mackenzie swim.

The youngest Heffernan even went to the NJSIAA Public B final with the Colts last winter, cheering from the bleachers.

The view from the pool deck has been just a little different. But the results have been the same for the most part.

Kinnelon advanced to the second round in NJSIAA North I-B with a 110-60 defeat of Sparta. The Colts boys, however, dropped to Northern Highlands, 106-64 on Thursday.

“I was kind of nervous because it’s so much of a bigger deal than other meets we’ve had,” said Kelsey Heffernan, who won the breaststroke just a few minutes after her sister Mackenzie finished first in backstroke.

“I didn’t realize how fast the meets go by. It’s fun being a part of the team. … I wasn’t expecting them to be as close-knit. The bus rides are really fun, because we listen to music.”

Senior Christina Cirillo — who won the 200 free as head coach Brian Boardman switched up his meet sheet — usually controls the Colts team iPod, and took part in an impromptu choir practice on the Lakeland Hills YMCA pool deck. Cirillo, sophomore Katie Thompson and freshman Violet Lazarus belted out part of a George Gershwin medley, then switched to a chorus of Frankie Valli’s “Sherry Baby.”

Kinnelon sophomore Nick Schrope picked up a pair of individual victories, with a touch-out by nine hundredths of a second in the IM and also the breaststroke. Sophomore Jon Bogda won the 50 free.

“It’s just fun being around everyone and a really enjoyable experience,” said Thompson, whose older sister Meghan won the butterfly on Tuesday. “Especially when you can get pumped up for all these state meets. We like to have a good time together as a team.”

Second-seeded Kinnelon awaits the winner of the Northern Highlands-Ramapo meet, which ended after press time on Thursday night. Their second-round meet will be on Monday.

Seniors Elizabeth Smith (IM) and Rachel Rippey (50 free) won individual events for Sparta, which made its third straight trip to the NJSIAA Tournament.

“It’s nice to finish out our careers coming back to states,” Smith said. “Everybody but the freshmen had already been here, so it was nice for the freshmen to get the experience and have it not be big and scary. We told them it doesn’t matter how it ends up. You have to swim as hard as you can. We were all just excited.”
