AURORA – No. 3 seed La Junta claimed a 3A softball state title over the two-time defending state champions and No. 1 seed Strasburg on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Aurora Sports Park. Not only was the La Junta softball team able to win the state championship game, but this win was also historic, marking the end to Strasburg’s 51-game winning streak.
There were no runs scored in the first inning. La Junta was first on the boards with a run in top of the second inning. In the fourth inning, Strasburg was able to tie the score up, and junior Annie Oakley’s double brought senior Sandy VanErt across home plate.
The score remained tied at 1 until junior Rylee Spence sent one to the center field fence, and scored on a solo home run for Strasburg.
This nail-biter of a game remained a Strasburg 2-1 lead over La Junta until the seventh inning. Top of the seventh, La Junta’s Sarah Zamora doubled, bringing in Whitni Oquist to score, and tying it up at 2.
Tie game. No sweat, right?
But then La Junta doubled again, and Zamora scored another run, bringing La Junta to a 3-2 lead over the reigning champs. Strasburg wasn’t able to score any runs in the last inning of the game.
La Junta won the 3A state title with a final score of 3-2 over Strasburg.
