La Vergne boys dominate Stewarts Creek on senior night

It was senior night for five members of the La Vergne boys basketball team and all five played a part in the Wolverines’ 71-44 win against District 7-AAA rival Stewarts Creek Friday night.

Seniors Isiah Reese scored 15 to lead the Wolverines, Dolorean Sparks added 14, Marquis Johns finished with 12 and Chuckie Sutton scored nine while J.J. Horner added four.

“It was emotional,” Johns said. “We wanted to come out and do what we could do as a team for the last time.”

The Wolverines jumped out to an early 21-11 lead after the first quarter and never trailed. All five of the seniors scored in the first quarter to build the lead. Sparks, Johns and Reese each had five first-quarter points, as Sutton scored four and Horner added two in the opening eight minutes.

“I figured the emotions would spill out onto the court, and they definitely did,” La Vergne coach Chris Chambers said. “We actually spent some time together last night, we went up to (a basketball game at) Cumberland University, just all five of us and my manager (who’s a senior), all seven of us. We spent some time and got to see some collegiate basketball as well.”

La Vergne built its lead to 36-21 by the half, as it improved to 18-8 (8-3 District 7-AAA). The team plays at Blackman Monday in a game that will determine second place in the district.

“We know it’s huge,” said Chambers. “Second place in the district automatically gives you that entrance into the region tournament. It’s a big game.”

Sean Kromah scored 13 to lead the Red Hawks.

“They came out with fire,” Stewarts Creek coach Arnett Bodenhamer said. “They’re very talented. They did exactly what they were supposed to do.”

Stewarts Creek girls 44, La Vergne 19: The Lady Red Hawks won their second District 7-AAA game of the season and earned their second victory over La Vergne this season.

Stewarts Creek scored the first 12 points of the game and never trailed.

“If you can a few wins in this district, it’s always a tough district, we’ll take them for sure,” coach Jessica Jackson said. “We have a chance to get another one (Siegel) on Monday. That’ll be a great game.”

Brandi Ferby scored 18 to lead the Red Hawks.
