A pair of 3-pointers sandwiched around the third-quarter buzzer gave Prairie Grove a double-digit lead, and the Lady Tigers held off a late Mountain Home rally for a 42-39 victory over the Lady Bombers in the opening round of the Lady Bulldog Classic on Thursday night at Fayetteville.
Mountain Home (0-2) will face Springfield (Mo.) Hillcrest at 8:30 p.m. today in the consolation bracket, while Prairie Grove will meet the host Lady Bulldogs at 7 p.m. in the winner’s bracket.
The teams traded baskets through the third quarter until Prairie Grove’s Mattie Hartin ended a stretch of five straight with a 3 to give the Lady Tigers a 36-29 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Mattie Hartin’s sister, Prairie Grove leading scorer Taylor Hartin, opened the fourth by knocking down another 3-pointer — her fourth of the night — to stretch the lead to 39-29, capping an 8-0 run.
The Lady Tigers kept the lead at 10 at 42-32 when the Lady Bombers went to their bench and received a late rally in the final minute.
Angela Masotto scored with 35 seconds remaining, Brianna Trevino added a basket, and Masotto hit 1 of 2 free throws after a Prairie Grove turnover with :07.5 remaining.
Cassie Martin led Mountain Home with 10 points, while Breelyn Arms notched eight, Vinessa Daniel added five, Aubrey Cowart and Trevino tallied four apiece, Masotto and Alivia O’Brien totaled three each, and Sydney Blevins chipped in two.
The Lady Tigers used the 3-point shot to gain an early advantage as Taylor Hartin, Camree Bartholomew and Taylor Doss each nailed treys to give Prairie Grove an 11-4 lead.
Mountain Home went on a 12-1 run from that point to end the first quarter. Martin scored five straight, and after 1-of-2 foul shooting by Prairie Grove, Martin scored again, Blevins filled the hoop and Daniel hit a 3 at the buzzer to give the Lady Bombers a 16-12 advantage.
Taylor Hartin hit another trey to open the second quarter, but 1-of-2 foul shooting by Martin and an old-fashioned 3-point play by Arms upped the Lady Bombers’ lead to 20-15.
Prairie Grove responded with a 10-1 run, however, going back up by four. Another 3-pointer by Taylor Hartin and a traditional 3-point play by Mattie Hartin stretched the Lady Tiger lead to 25-21. A putback by Trevino brought Mountain Home within two at the end of the half.
