One night later, Oakland remained mired in a hitting slump at Nelson Smotherman Field.

The Lady Patriots opened the Lady Warrior Southern Classic on Thursday evening with an 8-0 loss to Greenbrier, a Class AA statewide power.

“That’s just two straight nights of playing not very good ball,” said Oakland softball coach Janice Morey, whose team fell to rival Riverdale 9-0 a day earlier.

It was a 48-hour surprise to a team that had started the season 15-2, but have now lost three straight.

Greenbrier sophomore catcher Courtney Miles smacked a pair of three-run home runs to give the Lady Bobcats plenty of offense. It was Miles’ first two homers of the season after hitting 12 as a freshman.

Both home runs came off Oakland starter Lacie Rinus. Oakland played without junior second baseman/pitcher Hannah McCravy, who injured her ankle in the loss to Riverdale.

Oakland finished the game with just three hits — a Holly Shirey double and a Haley Carter and Savannah Decker single. Greenbrier pitcher Kaytlin Collins struck out six of the first nine batters and finished the five-inning contest with eight for the game.

The Lady Patriots’ best scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning when Carter, a Georgia Southern signee, singled and Sargent reached on a fielder’s choice.

But Savannah Lee lined out and McKinley Preston grounded out to end the scoring threat.
