It was a close game until a one-minute stretch of the fourth quarter, when everything went right for Siegel and everything went wrong for Stewarts Creek.
The Lady Stars defeated the Lady Red Hawks 50-40 Saturday evening, ending a four-game losing streak, and winning their first District 7-AAA game of the season.
Siegel led 35-34 when the one-minute stretch started, with three minutes left in the game.
Allison Bush got things started by connecting on a free throw and a 3-pointer, upping Siegel’s lead to 39-34.
Then Siegel got the ball back and Erica Roberts was fouled. It was the fifth foul on Stewarts Creek’s Taylor Vaughn, the second-leading scorer for the Red Hawks with eight points, ending her night.
Roberts missed the front end of a one-and-one. But Siegel’s Rachel Tracy got the rebound and scored on a putback.
“That was kind of a nail in the coffin,” Stewarts Creek coach Jessica Jackson said. “We were in such a rush to get the ball that we didn’t box out first. If you don’t box out first you give that opportunity away.”
On their next possession, the Red Hawks turned the ball over on an over-and-back violation.
Siegel got the ball inside to Tracy. She kicked it out to Maddie Francescan for a 3-pointer, who finished with a game-high 21 points.
“That was a big board and a big shot,” Siegel coach Alan Bush said. “Francescan had a big game. All of them played as well as they have all year.”
That made the score 44-34, and the Red Hawks never recovered from the deficit.
“We weren’t hitting well from outside,” Jackson said. “We lack experience to figure out how to bounce back from these runs – we’re all freshmen and sophomores. That’s something we’re going to have to work on.”
There were 11 lead changes and six ties in the game as the teams exchanged baskets. Neither team had more than a five-point lead until the key one-minute stretch in the fourth quarter.
Siegel improved to 8-9 (1-5 District 7-AAA).
“We needed this,” Bush said. “The girls were getting frustrated.”
Stewarts Creek, after having beaten La Vergne Friday night, fell to 3-15 (1-4 7-AAA).
Siegel boys 83, Stewarts Creek 54: Siegel’s press was too much for Stewarts Creek as the Stars remained undefeated on the year.
Clinging to a two-point lead at 28-26, the second-ranked Stars increased its pressure and scored 16 points thanks to multiple turnovers by the Red Hawks, who never recovered from the key run by Siegel.
Dominque Gooch scored 19 points for Siegel (19-0, 6-0 7-AAA) and Charles Clark finished with 18.
Stewarts Creek dropped to 7-13 (0-6 7-AAA).
