KUSA – The 1st ranked Brush Beetdiggers and the 2nd ranked Kent Denver Sundevils face off in a battle between the top two teams for the 2A football championship. Both teams have been on top all season long with undefeated 12-0 overall records on the year. Both teams also suffered devastating losses prior to the championship game last year, barely missing the 2A football championships.
The Sundevils lost last year’s game 9-7 in a low scoring second round game of playoffs to Manitou Springs but are looking to bounce back and redeem the title.
Head Coach, Scott Yates, said “I think that we realized that we needed to get better after that game. A lot of younger players had the opportunity to play that day due to numerous injuries, so the experience was good for them in their learning curve.”
Now the Sundevils are back stronger than ever and looking for a 2A state title with an impressive scoring track record this season. The team has been a scoring powerhouse so far this year with an average of 49.25 points per game and an average of 8.67 points against each game.
Their last game against against Platte Valley was the least amount of points scored all season with 19. “Our opponent last week was the defending state champs playing at home. So the number one reason it was a closer game was because of the opponent. The weather was difficult and limited what both teams could do and we made some mistakes that we don’t usually make,” said Coach Yates.
However, the team still managed to pull off a big win to play the 1st ranked Brush Beetdiggers. Yates said, “We have a huge challenge this week in traveling to Brush. They are a great team and a traditionally outstanding program. We need to bring our best game of the year in order to upset them.”
The 1st ranked Beetdiggers have also been putting in work after their 24-14 loss to Faith Christian in the semi-final 2A game last year. They average 44.9 points per game against and have three shutouts against opponents. One of those being Faith Christian who eliminated the team last year.
Brush will look to capitalize on a great year of football by trying to get a win at home against Kent Denver. The two play at Brush on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 1pm in the 2A championship football game.
