Lions race past Saints

CATHEDRAL CITY – Aly Angulo and Miyah Coleman both were key contributors as the Cathedral City High School girls’ track team topped Xavier Prep 68-59 on Thursday.

Angulo won the long jump (15 feet, 7 inches) and the triple jump, while Coleman captured the 100 (12.40) and the 200 (26.12). The two also were part of the winning 400 relay team (52.00) with Ashley Hernandez and Sirena Alarcon. Danaeya Burrell also won two events (shot put, discus) for the Lions (2-1).

Glenda Lopez led the way for the Saints winning the 100 hurdles (17.31) and setting a record in the 300 hurdles (48.27). Valeria Ruiz won both the 1,600 (5:39.83) and 800 (2:30.17).

Indio 62, Palm Desert 60: Kelcey Beckham won both the 100 hurdles (17.06) and the 300 hurdles (49.31). Other winners for Indio included Diana Espinoza (1,600, 5:55.10), Ivonne Zavala (400, 1:06.62), D’Neesya Baxter (100, 13.12), Daisy Simental (800, 2:30.07) and Amina Johnson (shot put, 28-3½).

BOYS’ TRACK

Cathedral City 79, Xavier Prep 48: Orlando Wallace was victorious in the 100 hurdles (15.10), 300 hurdles (39.40) and was a part of the winning 400 relay (43.60) with Joshua Mosley, Issaha Nsubuga and Justin Dorsey. Dorsey was also a multiple winner, winning the 100 (11.00) and the 200 (22.84), while Sergio Hernandez took the shot put (45-0) and the discus (153-0).

The Saints (1-1) were led by Emery Caster who won the 3,200 (10:03), Fisayo Omilana in the 400 (53.99), Chris McElrath in the high jump (5-6) and Jah Strange in the triple jump (41-4).

Palm Desert 69, Indio 56: For Indio, Isaiah Thomas won the 400 (51.56) and the 200 (22.68) and was part of the winning 400 relay (3:41.43) with Mario Salazar, David Luna and Raul Hernandez.

BASEBALL

Palm Springs 2, Rowland Heights 1: The Indians advanced to the finals of the Don Lugo Easter Classic as Alec Merrill allowed three hits and one earned run in six innings to record the victory. Oscar Castillo went 2 for 4 with an RBI while Martin Casillas hit the go-ahead RBI in the fourth innings. Julian Gonzalez added a hit and a run for Palm Springs (8-7), which plays Charter Oak in the championship Friday at Don Lugo High School

Shadow Hills 13, Yucca Valley 2: The Knights built an 11-0 lead after three innings behind 3-run homers by both Andres Garcia and Darian Beck. Garcia finished 3 for 3 and picked up the victory on the mound, striking out five and allowing one earned run in five innings. Beck added two doubles to go 3 for 4, while Edgar Gonzalez added a 2-run blast. Alex Lopez and Kevin Morden added two hits for Shadow Hills (4-8, 2-1 in De Anza League).

Big Bear 19, Desert Mirage 0: Jesus Felipe and Tony Delara both singled for the Rams’ two hits in a De Anza League loss.

SOFTBALL

Desert Hot Springs 5, Twentynine Palms 2: Makala August struck out 12 in a complete game for the victory and went 2 for 4 with two RBIs at the plate to lead the Golden Eagles. Briana Fonseca went 3 for 3 with a double while Liz Moreno and Makala August added two hits and two RBIs apiece for DHS (4-8, 3-0).

Shadow Hills 13, Yucca Valley 1 (6 inn.): Caitlyn Whiteside went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs and Annisa Gullen had two hits and scored three runs to lead the Knights. Whiteside also picked up the victory with 11 strikeouts. Luisa Davila-Pablo hit a grand slam while Megan Berrelleza went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs for Shadow Hills (9-3, 3-0).

BOYS’ GOLF

Palm Desert 204, Indio 328: Jake Vincent shot a 38 and Justin Kallmann scored a 39 to lift the Aztecs at Desert Willow. Chase Werry (41), Ben Lewis (43), Zane Rhodes (43) and TJ Wurtz (45) also contributed.

Xavier Prep 189, Steel Mountain 220: Thomas Tan and Harrison Yu each shot a 36 at The Classic Club to lead the Saints. RJ Garcynski, Caleb Oleson and Jay Simmers added rounds of 39 apiece for Xavier Prep (11-1), which faces La Quinta at the Classic Club on Tuesday in a matchup of DVL elites.

La Quinta 212, Palm Springs 248: The Blackhawks improved to 9-0 (6-0 in DVL) as Zach Gubler had a low score of 40. Mark Williams (41), Gabe Reeske (41), Michael Choma (45) and Carter McCue (45) stood out for La Quinta. Will McMahon (42), Quinn Swafford (44) and Jackson Kerr (48) paced the Indians.

Shadow Hills: The Knights recorded a score of 207 to defeat Desert Mirage. Luke Rockwell (41) and Lawrence Sanchez (42) led Shadow Hills, while Felipe Leon (44) and Adan Rodriguez (53) paced the Rams.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Palm Desert 18 Indio 0: The Aztecs improved to 9-0 overall (6-0 in DVL) as Connor Rapp (6-0, 6-0, 6-0), Alex Kuperstein (6-0, 6-0, 6-0) and Connor Berk (6-1, 6-0, 6-0) swept in singles. In doubles, Brenden Russell and Noah Feldman swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 while Devo Sauerbrey and Mark Welsh won 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Jared de la Paz and Roman Bloch added a 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 sweep for Palm Desert.

Cathedral City 11, Xavier Prep 7: Daniel Hernandez and Kevin Gastelum swept 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 while Francis Angeles and Chris Gutierrez won 6-0, 6-2, 6-1. Sam Navarrete and Dan Vogt won 6-1, 6-0. Andy Meza (6-1), Javier Plazola (6-0) and Robbie Stevens (6-0) added one set apiece for Cathedral City (7-2, 4-2).

The Saints received singles sweeps from Brian Johnson (6-4, 6-0, 6-3) and Tad May (6-0, 6-0, 6-1). Burke Meyers and Gabriel Dreisbach won 6-4 in doubles.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Palm Desert 134, Indio 20: Grant Stein won the 100 free and the 50 free and was a part of the winning 200 medley relay with Jack McGrath, Noah Thomas and Richard Tomlin to help lead the Aztecs. Conor Murray won the 200 free and the 100 butterfly.

La Quinta 96, Palm Springs 74: Bryce Ramos (100 backstroke, 200 IM) and Reilly Becker (200 free, 500 free) won two events each as the Blackhawks won at home. Kennedy Strong won the 100 butterfly while Aaron Lowell claimed the 100 free. Ramos, Beau Grutz, Strong and Lowell won the 200 medley relay while Strong, Ramos, Becker and Lowell took the 400 free relay for La Quinta.

Coachella Valley 105, Desert Hot Springs 58: Christian Ancheta won the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke and was part of the winning 200 medley relay with Jose Carpio, Roman Diaz and Fauston Figueroa. Roman Diaz also won two events (50 free, 500 free) and won the 200 free relay with Gerardo Avalos, Carpio and Figueroa. Figueroa was also a winner in both the 200 free and 100 butterfly.

Xavier Prep 122, Cathedral City 24: Joseph Sobrero won both the 100 free and the 50 free as the Saints beat the Lions. Other individual winners for Xavier Prep included John Garczynski (500 free), Matt Henrey (200 free), Ryan Cenicola (100 backstroke) and Troy Boysten (100 breaststroke).

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Palm Desert 130, Indio 25: Elise Stein (200 IM, 100 breaststroke), Emily Andrade (50 free, 100 backstroke) and Ariel Forehand (200 free, 500 free) each won two events. Stein, Andrade, Sarah Nichols and K.C. Dinneny won the 200 medley relay while Stein, Delic, Forehand and Bernice Amaya were victorious in the 200 free relay.

Coachella Valley 92, Desert Hot Springs 64: Valeria Gonzalez won the 50 free and the 100 fly and captured the 200 medley relay with Samantha Hernandez, Jasmin Ledezma and Diana Paez to lift the Arabs. Raylene Garcia, Gonzalez, Ledezma and Polette Zavala won the 200 free relay. Individually, Garcia won the 200 IM and the 100 free while Ledezma (500 free) and Zavala (200 free) also won for CV (3-3, 0-2).

Xavier Prep 122, Cathedral City 24: Lexie Letellier won the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke to help the Saints. Erin Fleet won the 50 free and the 500 free while Paulina Cordero was victorious in the 100 free. Shelby Andrade captured the 200 free and 200 IM.
