ERLANGER – Eric Turner returns for his second season as head coach of the Juggernauts. The former Boone County assistant coach went 6-5 last year, losing 21-18 to Walton-Verona in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs. Lloyd was 2-2 in district play.
Though the Juggernauts in coach Turner’s first year at the helm fell off by two wins from the 8-4 finish of 2012, three of the five losses were by a touchdown or less, with a close 34-28 loss to Holmes and a good defensive showing against district bully NewCath, a 22-7 winner at home.
They were a tough out in the playoffs, losing by three despite not playing their best in the final game against Walton-Verona.
After losing 16 to graduation, and with about 10 seniors expected back, overcoming NewCath and Newport could be tougher. Lloyd never has beaten NewCath in Class 2A and lost to Newport by three touchdowns in the regular-season finale. But Lloyd has proven it can beat Holy Cross, taking down the Indians each of the past two seasons. The Juggernauts are unbeaten against Bishop Brossart.
Top returners are senior quarterback Hayden Molitor, junior wide receiver Charles Gaines, senior wide receiver/defensive end Zach Riddle, and sophomore running back Lashunn Townsend.
Turner’s young roster numbers about 50, mostly sophomores and juniors. The opponents are the same as 2013, with the exception of the opening bowl-game showcase. Lloyd will play at Washington County Aug. 23, then play at Dayton and at Holmes before debuting at home against Owen County Sept. 12.
