THE WINNER: Mikiah Brisco


School: Baton Rouge (La.) Magnet
Grade: Senior
Event: Sprints and hurdles
Height: 5-foot-5

Athletic achievement: She won three individual Class 5A state titles this spring and led the Bulldogs to a second-place finish as a team. Brisco won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.55 seconds, took the 200-meter dash in 24.07 and captured 100-meter high hurdles gold in 14.02. The state’s returning Gatorade Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year, she also anchored the 4×100-meter relay team to victory at the state meet with a time of 47.76 seconds and was named MVP of the Class 5A meet for the second straight year. 

Academic excellence: Brisco has maintained a 3.73 GPA.

Exemplary character: A devoted member of her church community, she has volunteered locally feeding the homeless.  


“She’s so calm when she’s out there on the track, it’s unbelievable,” said Baton Rouge Magnet head coach Zach Winfield. “She’s a great kid and a great athlete. Probably one of the greatest athletes I’ve ever had here, but she’s so humble, and she’s always ready to help her teammates.”

THE FUTURE: Brisco has signed with LSU.
