The No. 29-seeded Loyola Lady Flyers ran into a buzz saw in their LHSAA Class 4A state playoff opener.

No. 4-seeded St. Thomas More got a no-hitter from Whitney Romero to win 15-0 in Lafayette. The Lady Cougars pounded 12 hits, led by Romero with a 3-for-4 effort with four RBIs. Romero and Bailey Hemphill had home runs, while Tori Andrus and Lexxi Gauthreaux had two hits apiece.

Kathryn Schrivener took the pitching loss for Loyola in its first season under Kristen Cole.

Avoyelles 6, Doyline 0: The Lady Vikings scored one in the fourth and fifth innings, then erupted for four runs in the sixth to slip past Doyline (11-7) in the Class B first-round contest. Avoyelles will now travel to top-ranked Florien for a second round contest at 4:30 Thursday in Florien.

Doyline pitcher Kim Coleman, catcher Haley Machen and centerfielder Chantrell Johnson performed well in a losing cause, according to coach Kevin Lewis.
