Loyola girls throttle Benton

Four goals from Madeline Mays and a hat-trick from leading scorer Anna Brown, including the best goal of the night, gave the Loyola Lady Flyers a comfortable 10-0 win over the Benton Lady Flyers to secure the district title. The game was never in any doubt with the Lady Flyers jumping to a 5-0 lead in the first 17 minutes of the game.

Loyola (24-2, 9-0) enjoyed complete domination as their young team, which includes only two seniors, continues their march toward the playoffs. Ranked number four in the state in the latest poll, the Lady Flyers are one of the contenders to challenge Ben Franklin for state honors.

“We’ve been playing really well lately but we’ve been playing a lot of games and haven’t had much time for preparation,” said coach Mark Matlock. “But we’re playing well and we’re ready to see what we can do against the top teams in the state.”

Mays scored three of her goals in the first half while Brown had one, as did Bailey Freeman to give the Lady Flyers a comfortable 5-0 lead within just 17 minutes. As they brought in younger players the game settled down and they were unable to add to their lead prior to the half. It took just 30 seconds of the second half though for Brown to add to the total and then she completed her hat trick five minutes later. Freshman Rebecca Mays added to the score in the second half.
