The facts: Joe is a fourth-year starter and three-time all-league bowler who finished 11th at regionals last March by one pin and also played on Ithaca’s Division 6 state championship football team last fall. He and senior Kaeden Greer were both perfect through nine frames in a competition among TVC schools earlier this month at Riverwood Resort in Mount Pleasant. Whitaker rolled a 300 and Greer a 277 to help the Yellowjackets to a 1,292 score that was a state record by a Division 4 school and only 18 pins off the overall state record.
From coach Wally Schneider: “His high game was 250-something, and his average this season is 200. We bowled there at Riverwood for regionals last year, but the kids weren’t super. We didn’t bowl great in our first Baker game, but then every single kid started hitting. It was something I have never seen before. Every kid was on. Watching them bowl, I really thought Kaeden was going to get his (300), because he was throwing it really smooth. They both were throwing the ball really well, but Kaeden throws it more down and in, while Joe throws a little more violent. I thought one might get away from Joe, and in the ninth frame the ball got out to the one board before it snapped back. The 10th frame, all were perfect shots and everybody pretty much went wild. He’s practicing all the time. The whole team is really dedicated. They go to the alley (Town and Country Inn of Ithaca) after school if we’re not having practice, and they’re there on Friday nights from 6 or 7 until it closes.”
