The facts: Masters fired a 75 to win the Kalamazoo Valley Association final tournament Monday at Gull Lake View Golf Club West in Augusta by four strokes over Maple Valley junior Rage Sheldon. Masters finished with the second-most points among the 12 golfers who made all-league. Senior teammate Keagan Carpenter finished fourth and joined Masters as a repeat all-KVA selection. Carpenter and Masters, who both advanced to the Division 3 state finals a year ago, came in fourth and 10th, respectively, in the Division 3 district on Wednesday at Railside Golf Club in Byron Center to help Olivet finish runner-up and advance to the May 30 regional at the Medalist in Marshall.
From coach Eddie Colins: “His dad’s had him in tournaments since he was about 8 years old. His experience and the strength in his swing have come together for us. His mother passed away the summer after his freshman year, so he had a rough sophomore year. He’s been through a lot of adversity and has come through it. He’s a vocal leader and carries himself real well. He’s playing every hole like it’s his last, because pretty soon it’s going to be. It’s been great for Keagan and him, because they have a friendly rivalry. They push each other to get better every day. This was the first time we have advanced as a team to regionals in 12 years, and that was our main goal this season because we host the regional on our course. So the guys and I were ecstatic to see some of the teams we picked off (in districts Wednesday). We looked up to those teams, and this year we finished ahead of them. This group of seniors has made me look very good as a coach the last four years.”
