Okemos sophomore

The facts: Kate is batting .537 with nine extra-base hits, two home runs, 14 runs batted in and 13 stolen bases for the Chiefs, who have compiled a record of 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the CAAC Blue. Buckland earned all-league honors as a freshman. She has compiled a 3.94 grade point average, and wants to become a teacher and softball coach after college.

From coach Chrissy Schoonover: “She’s a sophomore, but she plays with the poise and experience of a senior. As a catcher, she’s got a cannon of an arm. Teams don’t run much, but if they do, she guns them out. She’s our leadoff hitter. She really gets our team going. She gets on base, and it’s contagious. She hits for contact and power, and she’s super smart on the bases, She’s such a joy to coach. She’s the kind of kid that other teachers see is such a great student that they are excited to see her have success in softball. She also works with a batting coach and catching coach, and is always willing to catch for somebody or take extra batting practice. She’s a lot of fun to watch.”
