Madison Central senior golfer Camden Backel set a goal three months ago.
He knew it was lofty. He knew it wouldn’t come easy.
The 17-year-old wanted to qualify for the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Monday, it was accomplished.
“I’m so blown away right now,” he said.
Backel shot 7-under par, including 10 birdies, at Monday’s Sanderson Farms pre-qualifier at Lake Caroline in Madison.
The score earned him a spot in a eight-player, sudden-death playoff for the final spot in the PGA event’s 132-player field.
Those eight players include an All-American at LSU and one who was in the playoffs to qualify for the Masters last year.
They started on hole No. 10. Only two birdied: Backel and the LSU golfer.
On hole 11, Backel parred the hole. His competitor bogeyed.
“I’m speechless right now,” he said. “Really, this is so unbelievable. It still doesn’t feel real.”
