Manasquan upends Wall in MCT softball semifinals

Beating a team twice in a season is difficult. Beating Wall twice in a week is a rarity. But Manasquan did it again.

Quinn Saito, who slugged a three-run homer to give the Warriors an extra-inning win over the Crimson Knights five days earlier, beat out an infield single in the top of the seventh, went to second on a single to left-center by Meghan Gilly and scored on Skakyra Moore’s double to left-center for the eventual game-winner, as Manasquan (16-2) knocked Wall (16-4) out of the Monmouth County Tournament with a 5-4 semifinals win.

An RBI single by wining pitcher Victoria Galvan and another by Katie Barnes in the first put the Warriors up 2-0. In the third, Saito, who went 3-for-4, reached on an infield single before Gilly, who also went 3-for-4, singled to right and Moore followed with another single to right to bring in Saito to make it 3-0. Moore, who went 3-for-4 as well, added a solo homer to make it 4-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

Wall scored all its runs in the fifth to tie the game. Katie Wingel led off with a single to center, before Amanda Pringle beat out a bunt and Emily Mowen sacrifice bunted the runners to second and third, Casey DeSarno then singled to score Wingel and Pringle to cut the deficit to two. After Katrina Hand reached on an infield single, Jackie Howarth singled to center to bring in DeSarno, before Hand scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Dani Petrone.

In the bottom of the seventh Galvan retired the side in order for the victory, as she scattered seven hits, struck out eight and walked one.

Manasquan, the third seed, will take on the winner of the semifinal between top-seeded St. John Vianney and No. 4 Allentown, who go into the third inning on Saturday but had the game called due to rain and will be played Tuesday.

MARLBORO 13, MONMOUTH 8: Singles by Phoebe Li, Macie Ditillo, Brianna Brienza and Danielle Triolo helped put four runs on the board during the top of the sixth, extending the Mustangs’ lead to five runs, and Marlboro (11-8) advanced to the MCT White Division semifinals. Kayla Hueston crushed a two-run homer in the first to staked the Falcons (7-12) to a 2-0 lead before they added a run in the third to make it 3-1. Marlboro scored twice when Lindsey Fhima drilled a two-run triple to tie the contest.

In the fifth, the Mustangs added four more runs, fueled by an RBI single by Triolo, who went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, and an RBI single off the bat of Jenny Frometa, to take the lead for good. Bonnie Picone finished 4-for-5, while Ditillo went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, as did Brienza, who scattered seven hits and fanned six in the circle.

Middletown South scored twice in the fifth to grab the lead, but Veronica Woehr smashed a two-run homer to tie it up in the sixth. Giovanna Russomanno went 2-for-4 for Ocean, while Grace Heller and Phoenix Starick each had two hits for South.

MIDDLETOWN NORTH 9, RARITAN 4: Nikki Alfano led off the game with a homer and Christina Gebhardt hit a grand slam as part of a five-run fourth that staked the Lions (13-6) to a 9-0 lead and they cruised from there, as Audrie Thomas tossed a five-hitter for the victory in a nondivisional clash.
