Spring athletes are entering the final stretch, as the Michigan High School Athletic Association state tournaments are about to begin in girls’ tennis, boys’ lacrosse and track & field.
Girls’ tennis will kick off all the postseason action today, as Harper Creek, Coldwater and Marshall travel to a Division 3 regional at Stevensville-Lakeshore, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Also in Division 3, Pennfield will travel to a regional at Holland Christian on Friday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
In Division 2, seventh-ranked Lakeview, Battle Creek Central and Gull Lake will play in a regional at Portage Northern on Friday, starting at 8:30 a.m.
In Division 4, St. Philip/Calhoun Christian (co-op), Bronson and Galesburg-Augusta will compete in Friday’s regional at Battle Creek Central.
In boys’ lacrosse, Lakeview will travel to play at Bay City Western today in a Division 2 pre-regional beginning at 6 p.m. The winner advances to play top-seeded East Grand Rapids on May 21.
On Monday, Pennfield will host East Lansing in a Division 2 pre-regional, beginning at 7 p.m. The winner of that contest advances to face Pontiac Notre Dame Prep on May 22.
Track and field regionals will be held on Friday and Saturday.
In Division 1, Battle Creek Central and Lakeview will compete in a Division 1 regional at Loy Norrix on Friday.
In Division 2 on Friday, Harper Creek, Pennfield, Coldwater, Marshall and Gull Lake will compete at Mason.
In Division 3 on Friday, Galesburg-Augusta will compete at Constantine; Union City is at Quincy; Olivet and Maple Valley is at Ithaca. On Saturday, Delton Kellogg will travel to Grand Rapids’ Houseman Field.
In Division 4 on Friday, St. Philip/Calhoun Christian (co-op) will compete at Gobles. On Saturday, Athens, Bellevue, Climax-Scotts, Colon, Homer and Tekonsha will compete at Centreville.
Area teams earn state rankings
Several area prep teams have been recognized among the best in their sport, according to the latest polls released by their respective coaches associations.
* In girls’ tennis, Lakeview is ranked No. 7 in Division 2.
* In boys’ golf, Marshall is ranked No. 2 in Division 2.
* In baseball, Homer is No. 5 in Division 3; Climax-Scotts is No. 9 in Division 4.
* In softball, Bronson is No. 2 in Division 3; Colon is honorable mention in Division 4.
* In girls’ soccer, Gull Lake is No. 2 in Division 2; Marshall is No. 7 in Division 3.
