Riverdale got back to playing its brand of basketball Monday night.

The result was a dominating performance in the District 7-AAA consolation game.

Eighth-ranked Riverdale, which missed its first District 7-AAA championship game since 2005, routed Smyrna 93-75 at Siegel High to finish third in the league tournament.

“That looked a little bit more like Riverdale, didn’t it?” Riverdale girls coach Cory Barrett said afterward. “I’m proud of our effort and how we responded. The consolation game is a lot of times hard to get up for, because you know you want to be playing for that district championship.

“Riverdale is expected to be in that. And we expected to, but both teams that were in it deserve it. I’m really pleased with our effort.”

Riverdale (23-8) will play at fifth-ranked Columbia (23-4) at 7 p.m. Friday in a Region 4-AAA quarterfinal in an elimination game for the loser. Columbia defeated Riverdale 68-66 on Dec. 28 at Riverdale.

Shelbyville upset Columbia 48-44 in the District 8-AAA championship on Monday.

Smyrna (21-11) plays at Shelbyville (20-11) at 7 p.m. Friday. The Lady Bulldogs swept Shelbyville in the regular season.

Tennessee signee Alexa Middleton led Riverdale with a game-high 30 points. Teammate Hannah Pendergrass added 23 points. Clemson signee Shelbie Davenport had 17 and Deja Jones had 15.

Riverdale went on a 10-0 run late in the first quarter thanks to a full-court press and amped-up defense to break open the contest, taking a 14-point lead.

The lead never dipped below double digits the rest of the contest.

“It was fun,” Middleton said. “It was a lot of fun. We’ve been talking about it since the Oakland game how we needed to get back to team, team, team.”

Treasure Hunt led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points. Tyra Hughes added 13 and Brianne Alexander, an Austin Peay signee, chipped in with 12.
