Milner advances in singles play at state tennis tournament

Ithaca High junior Justin Milner breezed through his opening-round match at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tennis championships, defeating Peru Central’s Peter Daly, 6-0, 6-0.

The victory earned Milner a second-round match on Friday against sophomore Matt Gamble of Section 5’s Webster-Schroeder, the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. Gamble, who placed fourth last year, advanced by defeating sophomore Jack McClaren of East Aurora, 6-0, 6-3.

“Justin played very well (Thursday), made very few mistakes,” Ithaca coach Arthur Falkson said. “Now he’s got a real test (Friday morning).”

Ithaca’s doubles duo of junior Kevin Huang and eighth-grader Michael Zhao didn’t fare as well, as they fell to eighth-grader Max Benson and junior Peter Campito of Albany Academy, 6-2, 6-3. The Little Red pair will resume play Friday morning in the consolation round.

* The Corning doubles team of Alex Goforth and Gautham Sezhain advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Alex Fox and Connor Smith of West Genesee. The Hawks team will take on overall No. 1 seed Lucas Pickering and Maxwell Smith of Beacon High on Friday in the second round;

* Emerson Kelby, a senior from Norwich, fell to fourth overall seed Zain Ali from Half Hollow Hills East, 6-4, 6-1, and moved into the backdraw;

* Michael Perry, a senior from Seton Catholic Central, was defeated by No. 5 overall seed Tim Kane of Hamburg, 6-2, 6-3, and also fell into the backdraw;

* The doubles team of twin brothers Colin and Zan Stewart of Norwich won twice on Thursday — they defeated Warwick’s Spencer Brief and Pearse Algier in a play-in match, 6-2, 6-3, then defeated Guilderland’s Michael Zhu and Bill Dong, 7-6 (5), 6-3 later Thursday. They will face fifth-seeded Danny Miron and Nicholai Westergaard Friday in the second round.

The tournament continues with second- and third-round matches on Friday, and concludes on Saturday with semifinals and finals in both singles and doubles.
