THE WINNER: Connor Olson

THE BASICS

School: Wayzata (Plymouth, Minn.)
Grade: Junior
Position: Distance runner
Height: 5-foot-10

Athletic achievement: He earned seventh place at the 2013 Nike Cross Nationals Heartland Regional championships this past season, crossing the line 15:37. He also finished 34th at the 2013 Nike Cross Nationals Final in 15:36. A two-time First Team All-State selection, Olson took second at the Class AA state meet this past season, crossing the line with a time of 15:17.4.

Academic excellence: Olson has maintained an A-minus average and represents one of the state’s top academic candidates in meeting the Gatorade Award’s broad criteria.

Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally on behalf of the Plymouth Parks and Recreation department, as a youth track and field coach and in association with multiple fundraising initiatives to benefit cancer research.

THE PRAISE

“We have competed many times against Connor Olson and he is clearly one of the best in the state,” said Jamie Kirkpatrick, head coach at Edina (Minn.). “He’s a really good kid who works extremely hard. He’s the type of runner who really puts the team above himself, which is something you don’t always see when you’re competing at his level.”

THE FUTURE: Olson will be a senior this fall.
