THE WINNER: Shaina Burns
School: Lakeville (Minn.) South
Event: Hurdles, jumps and throws
Athletic achievement: She won the heptathlon at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor championships this spring with 5,163 points, which ranked as the nation’s No. 3 performance among prep competitors in 2014 and No. 34 in U.S. history. A four-year First Team All-State selection, Burns won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.44 seconds and the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 10.5 inches at the Class AA state meet. She also captured bronze in the 300-meter hurdles (43.80), leading the Cougars to a third-place finish as a team. Her shot put effort of 46 feet, 9.25 inches at the Class AA Section 1 meet ranked as the nation’s No. 22 performance among prep competitors in 2014 at the time of her selection.
Academic excellence: Burns has maintained a 3.86 GPA.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of Feed My Starving Children, Young Life and VOSH International (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity).
“Shaina Burns is arguably the greatest all-around track and field athlete the state of Minnesota has ever seen,” said Lakeville South head coach Andrew Hilliard. “Combining a rare combination of speed, strength, endurance and technical skill, she has the ability to compete at a very high level in a diverse range of track and field events. Just as impressive is her commitment as a teammate and the level to which she has helped lift her teammates to compete.”
THE FUTURE: Burns has signed with Texas A&M.
