Someone forgot to tell Airline’s Miranda Young to back off a little bit.
Showing a disdain for allowing her hits to fall anywhere close to the infield, the Lady Vikings’ catcher blasted two home runs and a pair of doubles in her team’s 23-6 win over Caddo Magnet on Tuesday at the Lady Mustangs’ field. Oh, and Young was robbed on another potential double by Magnet’s Katelyn Fajardo, who made a ESPN-highlight catch in left field.
“I’ve been working on my hitting because I slumped a little bit last year and I didn’t want to do that in my senior year,” Young said. “I wanted to pull through for my team. We’re all playing for each other. It’s not the ‘I’ team anymore but the ‘we’ team.”
Airline (13-5, 3-0 District 1-5A) pounded 25 hits with Young, Lindsay Fronzaglio and Madison Rowland each going 4-for-5 on the day. Katie Smith had three doubles and Brooke Daugherty went 3-for-3 for the Lady Vikes. The Lady Mustangs (7-10, 1-2) picked up a strong game from Miriam Trafford, Bailee Glass, Lauren Gray and Katie Bakalis each posting a 2-for-3 day.
“I knew we would eventually hit. It just took us awhile,” Airline coach Lynne Roberts said. “I don’t like waiting on us to hit.”
Young staked the Lady Vikings to a 3-0 advantage in the first inning when her blast over the left center field wall scored Smith. Magnet came roaring back in the bottom of the frame, however, when Miriam Trafford walked, followed by singles from Glass and Brittany Maples. Another walk to Sarah Mitchell forced in Trafford, then Bakalis singled in Glass. A wild pitch and a couple of Airline mistakes allowed Maples, Bakalis and Catie Letson to score to give the hosts a 5-3 lead after one inning.
Both teams were silent in the second, but the Lady Vikings broke things open in the third when Young, Kayla Ranit, Rowland, Daugherty, Fronzaglio and Smith collected hits as Airline pushed across 7 runs to go in front 10-5. The Vikes added three more in the fourth on a double by Rowland and singles by Daugherty, Carly McIntosh and Fronzaglio.
Trafford and Gray pitched in with singles for Magnet, but were left on base. The Lady Vikes finished things off in the fifth when they sent 15 batters to the plate and had runs scored by Young (2), Ashley Salinas, Ranit, Rowland, Daugherty, Bailey Tuberville, McIntosh, Fronzaglio and Smith.
Melissa Gillenwater (2-0) took the pitching win while sophomore Katie Bakalis (5-6) absorbed the loss.
