THE WINNER: Beth Coleman
School: West Jones (Laurel, Miss.)
Athletic achievement: She scored 30 goals and passed for 38 assists this past season, leading the Mustangs (20-2-1) to the Class 5A state championship. An All-Region selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Coleman is a two-time First Team All-State selection and was named Miss Soccer by the Clarion-Ledger.
Academic excellence: Coleman has maintained a 4.0 GPA.
Exemplary character: A devoted member of her church’s youth group and a tutor in her school, she has volunteered locally on behalf of the Special Olympics, youth soccer programs, blood-donation drives and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
“Beth Coleman is an awesome soccer player,” said Rick Sager, head coach at Laurel. “She’s lightning fast, with good skills, and she’s a real competitor.”
THE FUTURE: Coleman has signed with Southern Mississippi.
