THE WINNER: Taylor Werner
School: Sainte Genevieve (Mo.)
Event: Middle-distance and distance running
Athletic achievement: She won three individual state championships this spring and led the Dragons to a third-place finish as a team at the Class 3 state meet. Werner won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.18, the 1,600-meter run in state-record 4:44.26 and the 3,200-meter run, breaking the tape in 10:19.15. The state’s reigning Gatorade Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, her state-record clocking ranked as the nation’s No. 5 performance among prep competitors in 2014 at the time of her selection.
Academic excellence: Werner has maintained an A average.
Exemplary character: A member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, she has served as the secretary of her school’s student council and has volunteered locally on behalf of the American Red Cross and the Adopt A Highway Maintenance Corporation. She has also donated her time as an altar server at her church.
“Taylor Werner is a very special athlete,” said Scott Grinde, head coach at Warrensburg. “She is mature beyond her years and is absolutely fearless on the track.”
THE FUTURE: Werner will be a junior this fall.
