The Monroe Central baseball team’s quest to repeat as sectional champion wasn’t an easy one. The Golden Bears were only two games above .500 at the start of the Class 2A Daleville Sectional, and even after reaching the title game, they had to wait an extra day after a suspension because of rain.
And yet here they are, bound for regional once again.
Monroe Central finished the title game Tuesday, securing a 7-3 win against Wes-Del. Jesse Reum got things going Monday with a home run and seven strikeouts in 42⁄3 innings, and Jake Combs took things home on the mound.
“It shows a lot about them because it’s always tougher the second time around,” Monroe Centeral coach Blake Turner said of his team. “Everybody wants to beat you. It was good to handle that part of it.”
Monroe Central (15-11) opened play Tuesday with two runners on but stranded both. The Warriors (13-10) managed to plate two runs on one hit after the break, but could come no closer.
Reum got the win, moving to 5-1, while Kyle Boyd tossed 21⁄3 scoreless innings in the Tuesday portion of the game.
* Softball regional: Shenandoah’s season ended with a 9-0 loss to Elwood in the Class 2A Elwood Regional. The Raiders closed the year at 19-10.
