The Mount Anthony Union High School wrestling team successfully defended its regional crown on Saturday, finishing first in the New England championships by a 13-point margin over runner-up Danbury (Conn.).
Defending champ MAU placed three wrestlers in the tournament finals and crowned two individual winners, Troy Gassaway at 120 pounds and Jesse Webb at 285. The Patriots amassed 121 team points, ahead of Danbury’s 108.
Gassaway won the 120-pound crown by defeating Nick DeRosa of Billerica, Mass., 3-1 in the final match.
Webb, a four-time Vermont champion, beat Ahmed Hourani of Fairfield Warde (Conn.) 5-3 in the 285-pound final for his second New England triumph.
MAU’s other placewinners were Calvin Call (sixth at 106), Austin Price (third at 182) and Tyler Mattison (second at 195).
Other Vermont wrestlers also finished within the Top 6 of their weight classes: Grant Poston of Champlain Valley (third at 170), Nolan Viens of Bellows Falls/Hartford (fifth at 145) and Keegan Pearsall of Vergennes (fifth at 160).
