Mountain Lakes rules at LHY duel

Emily Zimmermann knows she isn’t just part of the swim team at Mountain Lakes. It’s a family, and a tradition. That may be more true than usual this season, with many sets of siblings — and head coach Dave Leshnower’s eldest daughter — as part of the program.

But Zimmermann also knows, with a smaller than usual squad, the continuity has become even more important.

The Lakers had stressed the importance of Tuesday’s cross-pool rivalry with Kinnelon, but after a month off even the swimmers weren’t quite sure how things would go. After all, the Colts girls reached the NJSIAA Public B final for the first time last winter.

So many of the swimmers also train together at the Lakeland Hills YMCA, which amped up the intensity even more.

Mountain Lakes emerged victorious in the LHY duel. The Lakers girls showed consistency while winning 97-73 — an almost identical score to last year, when Kinnelon came out on top. The boys had a more dominant 108-62 outcome over the Colts.

“It’s a throwback,” Zimmermann said. “It’s good though, we because we got a lot of new swimmers this year. The older swimmers and the siblings know what we stand for. … It’s easier for it to be passed down, because they epitomize it.”

Even when Kinnelon won an event, Mountain Lakes was right there — in bunches.

Senior Meghan Thompson was first in both distance races, followed by Lakers freshmen Heili Truumees and Jackie Gemici. Colts sophomore Lauren deTorres won the IM, with a trio of Lakers — junior Erin Kiely, freshman Kelly Shi and sophomore Katie Tsang — behind her.

Junior Erin Kiely and Emily Zimmermann went 1-2 in the butterfly. Emily Zimmermann and her younger sister Kara did the same in the 50 free. On the boys side, Lakers sophomore Quinn Rozanitis held off his older brother, senior Tyler Rozanitis in the 100 free.

In the girls 100 free, Kara Zimmermann and Kate Moreau took second and third after Colts senior Christina Cirillo. Shi and senior Jessica Schicke followed Cirillo in the backstroke.

Katie Tsang won the breaststroke as Mountain Lakes clinched first place overall.

Kinnelon senior Anthony Fresella won the 200 free and backstroke. Sophomore Nick Schrope also turned in an individual win for the Colts in the breaststroke. But both were followed by a pair of Lakers: Matt Luciano and Caleb Pallaria, and Robert Axt and Spencer Pallaria.

Mountain Lakes freshman Joe Scerbo led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 500 free, followed by Axt and Caleb Pallaria. Freshman Matt Luciano and Tyler Rozanitis went 1-2 in the 50 free.

Lakers senior James McElduff was first in the IM and butterfly.

“They were ready for it,” said Thompson, whose younger sister Katie also swims for Kinnelon. “We’re all such great friends. It’s weird when we’re not on the same team. This is what makes the sport great, the competition.”
