MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich.
A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot just a few hours before he was to be honored at a high school sports banquet in western Michigan.
Two people are in custody in the death of Marquis Gresham, who was a junior at Muskegon Heights Public School Academy and a player on the basketball team.
Muskegon Heights police Chief Lynne Gill tells the Muskegon Chronicle there was a disturbance before the shooting late Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses say multiple shots were fired from a vehicle.
Classes at the high school have been canceled until Monday, although the school will be open Friday for people to talk to counselors.
Superintendent Alena Zachery-Ross says Gresham was “becoming a student leader and transforming into a role model” for other students.
