Mustang girls socer team rumbles back to Final Four

By

Merritt Island High’s girls soccer team won its way into the Class 3A state tournament on Friday with a 3-0 win at Largo.

The Mustangs will play a state semifinal Thursday at either 10 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. on the campus of Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne. Should they win that game, they will advance to the 3A final on Friday at 8 p.m.

Scoring goals for Merritt Island against Largo were Kellie Krygier, Kayli Jacobs and Sophia Nicolini. The Mustangs led at halftime 1-0. Alex Woeste and Karly Denaburg had assists.

“We played really well,” head coach Scott Carswell said.

“The weather conditions turned out not to be a factor. We’re just excited to be going to the Final Four again.”

Merritt Island’s last state tournament appearance was in 2011, when they finished as the Class 4A runners-up. That came a year after the program’s state championship.

This will be Merritt Island’s sixth state tournament trip, the fifth under Carswell.

Merritt Island, which is now 16-2-3, continued to make it tough on opposing offenses at Largo. The Mustangs have outscored their opponents 13-1 in the postseason.
