Naples junior QB has dominating performance vs. Estero

Naples junior quarterback Kieran DiGiorno’s impressive performance in his first career start helped the Golden Eagles to a 69-9 victory over Estero in the District 6A-13 opener on Friday night at Staver Field.

DiGiornio tossed a 96-yard touchdown to senior receiver Dante Hoppa on Naples’ first play from scrimmage and finished with 175 passing yards and three touchdowns in addition to two rushing touchdowns.

Naples (3-1, 1-0) played without senior quarterback Michael Walker and junior running back Carlin Fils-Aime because of ankle injuries.

“That pass got everyone’s nerves out of the way,” DiGiorno said of his connection with Hoppa. “It was great to get a win. I just tried to come out and help my team the best that I could.”

Senior running back Max Joseph and junior running back Antonio Carbanaro each found plenty of room to run against the Wildcat defense. Joseph rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown and also caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from DiGiorno.

Carbanaro rushed for 116 yards and three touchdowns.

“I wasn’t concerned about the scoreboard,” Kramer said. “I wanted to see us be really physical and I wanted to see us protect the football…Our guys ran hard and played hard on both sides of the ball.”

Kramer said that Walker could have played tonight as he was dressed on the sideline but never entered the game. Walker is expected to play when Naples takes on Lely in the Coconut Bowl on October 2.

Fils-Aime has a more severe ankle injury and is not expected to play against rival Lely.

Estero has moved to a single wing offense since losing senior quarterback Cody Long for the season with a knee injury. The Wildcats did have some success running the ball against Naples as junior running back Wilkinson Glesil rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Glesil broke a 62-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for Estero’s lone touchdown.

“We are trying to give ourselves a chance to compete,” Jackson said of the move to the single wing. “We just have to continue to keep working.”

The Wildcats did not complete a pass in the loss and junior quarterback Nick Johnson only attempted two. Estero lost a fumble on the final play from scrimmage and Naples junior defensive end Colby Horne grabbed it and ran 30 yards for a touchdown as time expired.

“We have to get better on defense,” Jackson said. “Giving up those points in the second half was a little disheartening but we just have to keep working and keep getting better.”
