Natchitoches Central glides into quarterfinals with win over New Iberia

Freshman Brandon Rachal scored a game-high 15 points and played a key defensive role as the second-seeded Natchitoches Central Chiefs held 15th-seeded New Iberia to just nine first-half points en route to a 55-45 regional round victory over the Yellowjackets Tuesday night in Natchitoches.

Rachal and Austin Guy held high-scoring District 3-5A MVP Mike Sam to just eight points, six of which came on a pair of 3-pointers on the last two possessions of the contest.

“That was a fantastic effort for our guys against a great player,” said Natchitoches Central head coach Micah Coleman. “Sam scored 36 in their first-round win, and we held him without a field goal for the first 30-something minutes of the game. The only game this season that we may have played better against one player was the Byrd game, when we held (Chad) Lott without a point. Very proud of our guys on this one.”

Guy and Danny Cohen fired in 10 points each and Cameron Lard added eight as Natchitoches Central improved to 28-5. The Chiefs advance to face tenth-seeded East Ascension in Friday’s quarterfinal round after the Spartans eliminated seventh-seeded East St. John, 69-55, on Tuesday.
