Neenah Rockets clinch share of FVA title

The Neenah boys’ basketball team made Senior Night a special one as it wrapped up at least a share of its first Fox Valley Association title since 1998 on Thursday.

Matt Heldt scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the first half as the Rockets beat Fond du Lac 66-40.

Neenah bolted to a 43-12 halftime lead and coasted from there.

Oshkosh North 61, Kaukauna 58

At Kaukauna, Carter Belling scored 22 points and Kyle Schalow added 19, but the Ghosts came up short in the end.

Oshkosh North took the lead after hitting two free throws after a technical foul was called with 1:26 to go. Nathan Neveau then hit a pair of free throws with 11.3 seconds remaining to give the Spartans a three-point lead.

Kaukauna was fouled on a three-pointer at the buzzer, but couldn’t convert.

“Despite the loss, I thought our kids played extremely hard and competed tonight,” Kaukauna coach Michael Schalow said. “I’m extremely proud of the way we played. Our guys never gave up and I was proud of our effort. Despite the loss, we’re going into the tournament at the right time. We’re really battle-tested based on our schedule this year.”

Neveau paced Oshkosh North with 22 points.

Kaukauna jumped out to a 15-6 lead after one quarter, but the Spartans rallied to tie the game at the half at 28-28.

Appleton East 50, Appleton West 45

At East, Pierce Moriarty scored 18 points and Sam Herrmann had 15 to lead the Patriots.

Moriarty was six-for-eight on free throws in the fourth quarter and Herrmann made two of his five three-pointers in the fourth for the Patriots.

“It was a good game,” East coach John Mielke said. “We were able to make enough free throws to hold them off. They made a couple tough threes and some nice drives. We were fortunate to get the victory.”

Dominick Thompson had 14 points to lead the Terrors.

At Oshkosh, Kimberly held the Wildcats to five first-half points, including zero in the second quarter, as they cruised to the big win.

Tucker Paschen led the Papermakers with 13 points, while Travis VanderHyden added 12.

At Menasha, Mike Lukashewich scored 19 points and Ian Gerrity added 12 as the Lightning recovered from a slow start to pull away from the Bluejays.

Menasha led 4-3 after one quarter before Appleton North took charge, grabbing a 17-10 halftime lead. The Lightning upped that margin to 28-18 after three.

Devonte Johnson paced the Bluejays with six points.
