THE WINNER: Tate Martell
School: Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.)
Weight: 170 pounds
Athletic achievement: He has led the Gaels to a 14-0 record, the No. 1 ranking in the USA TODAY Super 25 and a berth in the Division I state championship game against Sparks (Nev.) Reed, scheduled for Dec. 6. At the time of his selection, Martell had completed 115-of-187 passes (61 percent) for 2,335 yards and 34 touchdowns against just two interceptions. The transfer from Poway (Calif.) also rushed for 437 yards and four touchdowns through 14 games and was named to the All-Southwest League First Team.
Academic excellence: Martell has maintained a 3.58 GPA and represents one of the state’s top academic candidates in meeting the Gatorade award’s broad criteria.
Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally as a youth football coach and counselor.
“Tate Martell is unbelievable,” said Dan Barnson, head coach of Las Vegas Arbor View. “The kid plays huge in big games. Gorman should feel pretty confident knowing they have him for the next two years.”
THE FUTURE: Martell has verbally committed to Washington.
