Of the top 12 finishers in last year’s event, only two are back this season
Several new faces figure to be in the mix for the individual title at this week’s Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA Boys’ Golf State Championships at Bowling Green Country Club.
Of the top 12 finishers in last year’s event, only two are back this season — West Jessamine’s Connor Haas (tied for fifth) and Covington Catholic’s Paul Huber (ninth).
The two-day event will tee off at 8 a.m. EDT Friday and continue through Saturday’s final round.
The field includes eight individuals ranked among the top 10 in the All-State points standings — Jackson County sophomore Zach Norris, Elliott County junior Ryan Gillum, Glasgow sophomore Chase Landrum, St. Xavier junior Michael Sass, Franklin County junior Jacob Cook, Trinity senior James Inman, North Laurel junior Kyle Jeffers and Union County junior Steven Zehr.
In the team race, West Jessamine has won two straight state titles and is back after winning the Region Four Tournament last week. Along with Haas, the Colts feature senior Chase Thornhill and juniors David Lee, Chase Philpot and Caleb Bol.
St. Xavier won the Region Six Tournament with an impressive score of 276. The Tigers have five juniors in the lineup. Allen Hamilton won the regional with a score of 66 and was followed by Matt Liston (68), Michael Sass (69), Billy Basham (73) and Drew Kiehl (73).
St. X last won the state title in 2009, finishing as the runner-up three times and third once in the four years since then.
Region Five runner-up Bullitt East and Region Six runner-up Trinity also qualified. Inman led Trinity with a 71 in the regional tournament. Sophomore Zach Taylor paced Bullitt East with a 74.
Ryle, McCracken County and Franklin County are considered other top teams in the field.
Four individuals from the Louisville area also qualified — North Oldham’s Josh Maier and Mason Lenhart, Male’s Erik Edwards and Butler’s Chase Wathen.
