Newark’s Teddy Metzen played his role well as the South won a thriller Sunday in the North-South All-Star Games at Ohio Dominican University.
Gahanna’s Javon Bess, headed to Michigan State, scored 28 points as the South edged the North 102-100 in the boys Division I-II contest.
Metzen chipped in with seven points on 3-of-6 shooting for the South. He also led his team with two blocked shots and had an assist and a rebound in 20 minutes of action.
Among other South players, Kevin Vannatta of Division I state runnerup Upper Arlington scored 16 points, while Zanesville’s J.T. McFarland contributed nine points for the winners.
Maggie Mitchell from Newark and Johnstown’s Natalie Carpenter played for the South in the Division I-II girls game, as they fell to the North 95-48.
Mitchell led the South with four assists and also snagged five rebounds in 21 minutes, scoring four points in the loss. Carpenter went 2-of-4 on 3-pointers while hitting for six points in 16 minutes.
Reynoldsburg’s Alyssa Rice paced the South with 13 points.
