Niall Handley got up and down on the 18th hole to win the eighth annual MGA Mid-Amateur Championship on Wednesday at Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell, New Jersey.
The Essex Fells C.C. member closed with a 1-over 72 and finished a stroke ahead of his former college roommate, Brian Komline, with a 3-over total of 145.
It’s the second time Handley has won the Gene Westmoreland Trophy. He also won three years ago.
Komline was leading by three heading into the final round, but the Black Oak G.C. member doubled the 17th and bogeyed the 18th, finishing the round with a 6-over 77.
“I kind of knew around par would win,” Handley said. “It was a really tough day, the wind was blowing 30, 40 miles an hour and the greens were very fast and very difficult.”
Ryan Chin, the reigning Rockland County Amateur champion, was third with a 5-over total of 147. Defending champion Michael Karger finished in a tie for 16th. The Century C.C. member was 14-over.
