Norfork wins on Homecoming night

By

The Norfork Lady Panthers used big runs near the start of each half to cruise to a nonconference victory over Lead Hill on Homecoming night.

The Lady Panthers used a 14-0 run in the first quarter, and a 10-2 run in the third to fuel a 55-33 victory over the Lady Tigers on Friday night at Bobby D. Hulse Gymnasium.

Sophomore Kelcy Acklin led the Lady Panthers — now 15-7 overall — with 21 points, while junior Abbie Belding added 13 and senior Cheyenne Acklin found double figures with 11.

Norfork will face Bergman tonight in the third-place game of the North Arkansas College Girls’ Tournament at Pioneer Pavilion in Harrison.

“Up to this point, we’ve played six games in eight days,” Lady Panthers head coach Josh Laymon said, “and after (today), it will be seven games in nine days. We played (Bergman) at the (Twin Rivers) Classic, and it was a close game. I’m looking forward to it. They do a lot of things, athletically, that we don’t see in our conference, like the run-and-jump.”

The teams were tied 4-4 early before the Lady Panthers went on a 14-0 run. Kelcy Acklin converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to start the run, and Brittany Kocka made a basket and two free throws for an 11-4 lead.

Cheyenne Acklin added a pair of baskets off steals as the Lady Panthers started scoring off their full-court pressure, and Belding drained a 3-pointer to make it an 18-4 cushion for the hosts.

“They’re great kids, and they’re hungry to learn the game,” Laymon said. “For them to have this success, they’re very deserving of it. Even when we aren’t winning, we’re learning.”

The lead remained at 14 after one quarter as Norfork held onto a 22-8 advantage, but Lead Hill’s Hailey Groen hit her second 3-pointer of the game to draw the Lady Tigers within 22-11.

Kelcy Acklin scored and Belding hit two free throws to push the lead back to 15, and the hosts held a 28-13 lead at halftime.

The Lady Tigers climbed as close as 13 at 30-17, but Norfork started to pull away again with a 10-2 run.

Kelcy Acklin hit a 3-pointer to start the run, and Belding scored five on a 3 and a deuce, the latter of which stretched the lead to 40-19 late in the third. The Lady Panthers held a 43-23 lead at the end of three.

Norfork led by as many as 26 in the fourth, while Lead Hill climbed only as close as 21.

Hailey Groen paced Lead Hill with 13 points.
