THE WINNER: Austin Stamey
School: T.C. Roberson (Asheville, N.C.)
Weight: 162 pounds
Athletic achievement: He led the Rams to a 27-0-2 record and the Class 4A state championship this past season. Stamey scored 34 goals and passed for nine assists, including the assist on the game-winner in the state title match. The 2013 North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association State Player of the Year, Stamey was an All-American selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and a two-time Citizen-Times All Western North Carolina Player of the Year. He concluded his prep soccer career with 90 goals and 40 assists.
Academic excellence: Stamey has maintained a weighted 4.22 GPA.
Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally as a youth soccer coach and as part of multiple community-service initiatives in association with his church youth group. He has also completed service mission trip to Guatemala.
“I got to watch some of the best players in the state and I will tell you Austin Stamey is the best player I watched,” said Todd Worley, head coach of Raleigh (N.C.) Sanderson. “He is athletic, very technical and very tactical. He has speed and power. I used two and three people to try to control him and we had no answers for him.”
THE FUTURE: Stamey has signed with Appalachian State.
