On Oct. 6, Maximus (Max) Abernathy, 4, was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes. Max is the son of Scott Abernathy, athletic director and head football coach at North DeSoto High.
After Max’s diagnosis, his uncle, Chad Abernathy, teacher and coach at Parkway High School, came up with a way to honor him and raise awareness. Parkway’s Coach Ab approached North Desoto’s Coach Ab about the possibility of hosting a 5K run in his honor. The WARRIOR 5K: Gladiators for Maximus was born. The name was inspired from Max’s name which means “the greatest” and also from the movie GLADIATOR.
Like DeSoto parish schools, Parkway High requires their students to do senior projects. Terrell Grimsley, Parkway Senior was chosen to take on this project.
Please come out and support this wonderful cause and fight diabetes like a Gladiator!
On Sunday, April 13, at 2 p.m., North DeSoto and Parkway will co-host this event. The event will be on the campus of North DeSoto High School with plans to make it an annual event rotating between schools.
